Local Watchdog for Philanthropy Legislation
We alert members whenever legislative changes are proposed that would be harmful to the practice and promotion of ethical fundraising and philanthropy in RI. AFP members have helped prevent bills that would have required RI nonprofits to disclose their donor lists, be unable to receive gifts in person from a donor, and unduly burdened nonprofits with unwanted speech in phone solicitations.

Around the world, the AFP Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice has become the model for the ethical values and practice standards that AFP members embrace and strive to uphold as they seek to generate philanthropic support. One of the best but least known benefits of AFP is the Fundraising Resource Center information provided online, via fax and through the mail, staff are available to research and locate answers to your specific fundraising questions from more than 3,200 reference works.

AFP’s highly acclaimed, bi-monthly magazine Advancing Philanthropy examines the issues facing fundraisers and the philanthropic process through interviews, how-to articles, current research, and information on public policy that impacts the nonprofit sector.

Career Development through a monthly Professional Postings newsletter, Career Profile, AFP’s website, AFP Bookworks, AFP AudioConferences, and the annual International Conference on Fundraising.

Legislative watchdog. AFP monitors and responds to federal, provincial and state legislative and regulatory issues that affect fundraising and philanthropy. Political action and lobbying tips and advice are always available to members.

Networking – One of the greatest benefits of AFP membership is the opportunity to network and exchange information with your peers, both locally and internationally. You’ll find your colleagues willing and ready to help support you in your path to professional development.
